A yet to be identified police officer was shot in the leg on Thursday while pursuing armed robbery suspects in Opu-Nembe Motor Park opposite the commissioners housing estate, Bayelsa State.
Reports said the policeman and his colleagues pursued the robbery suspects with their patrol van after they robbed a man of the sum of N50, 000 at Swali area in Yenagoa and escaped towards the Sani Abacha through the Isaac Boro Expressway.
The robbers who were said to be on a tricycle, popularly known as Keke was stopped by their victim whom they robbed of his money and zoomed off.
A witness who gave his name as Isedirikonghen Ebi Alhaji said the victim raised the alarm on sighting a Doo-Akpo security patrol van which contacted other vans and engaged the robbers in a chase.
He said the robbers during the hot pursuit alighted from their tricycle at Opu-Nembe Motor Park opposite the commissioners housing estate and opened fire on the police officers when they observed that they were catching up with them.
Alhaji said the bullet hit one of the policemen in the leg, adding that as the officers continued to close in on them from all corners, the suspects’ hurriedly jumped into a canal channelling flood to the Epie creek to avoid arrest.
The witness said two of the robbers were apprehended during the incident while two others hid inside the weeds on the canal.
The suspects and the tricycle were taken to the station while police officers cordoned off the area in search of the fleeing robbers.
